The British began experimenting with frying fish during Queen Victoria's reign. With the Industrial Revolution, this quick-to-prepare and easy-to-eat lunch became a mainstay in British culture. In the mid-19th century settling in the Midwest, immigrants observed the religious custom of abstaining from meat on Fridays. Fish became the staple alternative, and over time, the Friday fish fry evolved from a simple meal to a communal event. Churches, community centers, and local restaurants began hosting fish fries, turning them into weekly gatherings that fostered social connection and community spirit. Fish frying became popular in the United States, too.

From this tradition, this holiday takes place on the first Friday following the beginning of Lent and is championed by Wisconsin's Caleb Westphal.
